Doctors Himanshu and Falguni Bavishi of the city-based Bavishi Fertility Institute have achieved a first-of-its-kind pregnancy in which they used frozen oocytes or female eggs. The in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) specialists have achieved this feat using a new technique of ‘vitrification’, a method of quick freezing.
The medical fraternity in Japan has done pioneering work in this field. Dr Himanshu, director of the institute, said, “After many years,
excellent techniques, culture media and disposable materials for handling such sensitive gametes have been developed.”
